So now you want to know how to vodcast? You either want to vodcast your lessons live or you may want to pre-record your lessons and adopt the Pre-Vodcasting model of education. First of all, we recommend that you first start Vodcasting your live lessons that you are already doing. If you see the utility of this method then you may want to begin Pre-Vodcast your lessons.
What you will need to Vodcast
- Software: A program like Snapkast or Profcast that will take your Powerpoints and or Word files and convert them into Vodcasts. When we were doing our research, we decided to work with Snapkast because as of this time, it supports pen-strokes. It is also works with pc’s and we pc computers. If you are using a macintosh, you will need to use Profcast.
- Digital Writing Tool: Something that would be really helpful is some sort of a way to annotate your powerpoints. We use a Wacom Bluetooth Graphire Tablet (See links on where you can buy it). This costs about $200 and if you don’t have Bluetooth installed on your computer, you will need a Bluetooth adaptor that costs around $20. One note on the tablets is that there is a learning curve on how to write on one. When most folks write they write while looking at what they are writing. With the Wacom Graphire, you have to learn while looking at the screen. When I first did this my handwriting was not very good. I took my computer home and practiced writing. I now have passable handwriting. You can also use a tabet-pc. These are very nice, but more expensive that the Wacom tablet. The tablet PC is not necessary, but if you are on the market for a new computer, this may be the way to go.
- Audio: Microphones vary greatly in price and quality. Currently, we use an inexpensive desktop microphone. When we began recording live we tried blustooth headsets, but we were never able to make them work well. We then purchased a usb wireless headset microphone that worked nicely. This allowed us to make vodcasts from anywhere in the room. You can spend as much or as little as you want depending on the level of sound quality you feel is acceptable.
